JKA Shotokan Nippon Karate Club Red Deer

About the Japan Karate Association (JKA)
The Japan Karate Association (JKA) is one of the most influential and respected karate organizations in the world. Established in 1949 in Tokyo, Japan, the JKA was created to preserve and promote traditional Shotokan karate as a disciplined martial art and way of life.
The JKA was founded by senior students of Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate. Under the leadership of Masatoshi Nakayama, the organization developed a systematic training curriculum and instructor program that helped standardize Shotokan karate worldwide.
During the 1950s and 1960s, JKA instructors were sent abroad to spread traditional Japanese karate. This effort led to the establishment of JKA-affiliated dojos across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Today, the JKA operates in over 100 countries.
The JKA emphasizes:
Strong fundamentals (kihon)
Formal patterns (kata)
Controlled sparring (kumite)
Discipline, respect, and character development
Its motto reflects the traditional spirit of “The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character.”
